About UsLearn more about what Harvest to Home is all about
Our produce is sourced from organic local farmers when in season and available. Due to the small number of certified organic local farms in our area, we also source produce from small farms that grow to organic standards, but without the third-party certification. Some farms are simply too small to absorb the added costs certification requires, while others may grow sustainably as a guiding principle of their religious beliefs, and they may also omit any mechanization in their growing practices. Either way, Harvest To Home will ensure that we are transparent with you about the growing practices of all our products so you can make an informed decision.
We also provide a large selection of certified organic produce that we source through a distributor, which includes imported varieties of produce not found locally or when out of season.
Although it would be nice to be able to eat 100% local, we understand that it is a difficult proposition to make such a commitment, and also a challenge because supply is limited during the winter months. It is our goal to increase demand for more local products and work with farmers and suppliers to increase availability year-round, so they have a more consistent market through our customer base. We encourage customers to provide input regarding their produce preferences and provide a platform to do so. We remain open to providing some local-non-organic produce if the demand is higher than we can supply for our local-organic produce box.
Our grocery products are a mix of organic and non-organic, local and non-local, based on availability and priority in our buying mandate.
We place local AND organic in the top tier of our purchasing hierarchy. If a product is both local and organic, we will do everything possible to provide this product to you, our customer.
The next level of priority will be placed on local-non-organic OR organic-non-local products. If we have the option to provide a local-non-organic item and an organic item independently, we will choose to provide both, giving our customers the choice to choose what is best for them.
The third tier contains products that fall under the non-organic AND non-local description. If we can not source a product from the first two tiers, but it is considered a needed or popular item, we will bring it in, but it must follow our stringent ingredient requirements listed below. For lack of a better word, it must be “natural”, and be free of sythetic ingredients, including artifical additives, preservatives and dyes. We also try to prioritize products that are free of genetically modified organisms.
When we choose to carry animal products, or products that contain animal ingredients, we prioritize organic over local. We believe that animal welfare is of the utmost importance, and we will do our best to ensure most of our products are free of animal cruelty, antibiotics, and growth hormones, etc.
Using certified organic products is the best way to ensure that goal. Having said that, we understand that many small local producers may include conventionally raised animal ingredients in their products. We want to support and encourage our local entrepreneurs, so we will make exceptions for this on a case by case basis.
We will always strive to carry a large variety of dairy-free and vegan products for the growing population that holds animal welfare high on their list of healthy food purchasing priorities.
Personal Care Products
Understanding the ingredient lists of the many personal care products on the market today can be very confusing. Many companies may use generic terms like “natural” and “chemical-free” which actually lack regulation or meaning.
Although we are not experts, we will always endeavour to find the most authentic products available that are made with 100% plant based, biodegradable ingredients that have never been tested on animals. Our products will be personally tested and will come highly recommended.
We are open to comments or suggestions by you, the respected user of these products. We look to you to help us select the best products to add to our catalogue offerings.
